Sedona, AZGet to Know the Artist
Sumati Colpitts is a talented ceramic artist whose work captivates audiences with its whimsical nature and heartfelt craftsmanship.
In 1989, Sumati’s creative path led her to India, where she worked with Michael Colpitts in an ashram, exploring spirituality and art. Nearly a decade later, their reunion in Sedona marked the beginning of a fruitful artistic collaboration and partnership.
Together with her husband, Michael Colpitts, Sumati has developed an award-winning line of ceramic sculptures. Their creations reflect a shared love of animals, art, and global experiences. Each piece is meticulously handmade without the use of molds, ensuring that every sculpture is a one-of-a-kind work of art.
Their process is deeply collaborative, blending Michael's expertise in form, gesture, and expression with Sumati's eye for detail and finishing finesse. Using techniques such as slab and pinch, they craft their sculptures with colored stoneware clays, natural hues, and textured accents that add elegance and playfulness.

In The Studio
The ProcessSumati’s dedication to quality and craftsmanship is evident in every stage of her work. After the creation of the whimsical sculptures using slab and pinch clay molding techniques, they are air-dried for up to two weeks before undergoing a bisque firing at 1600°F, which strengthens the clay. A second firing at 2300°F finalizes the pieces, making them durable and suitable for both indoor and outdoor display.

Finishing touches include the addition of glass eyes, wire whiskers, and custom bases, as well as hand-applied washes and glazes to create depth and vibrancy. Each sculpture is a testament to her passion, blending artistry and precision to create timeless pieces that inspire joy and wonder.

Care and Cleaning
To clean and care for ceramic sculptures, gently dust them with a soft, dry brush or damp microfiber cloth to remove surface dirt.
With their clay rendered water-tight during the process, many of the finished pieces can be safely displayed outdoors, as the colors are fade-resistant under the sun.
