Get to Know the Artist

Founded by Danielle Blade and Stephen Gartner, Gartner Blade creates contemporary hand-blown glass art.

Danielle, originally from the Isle of Wight UK, completed her apprenticeship at Isle of Wight Glass and studied with prominent American and European glass artists. Stephen, who grew up in the southern U.S. and Naples, Italy, began his glass making career working with borosilicate glass. Stephen adapted techniques commonly used for torch work for use with hot glass. These adapted techniques allowed for great creativity and flexibility and the collaboration of Gartner Blade Glass began.

These two talented artists have been partners since 1996, using their talents, skills, and ideas to create unique lines of glass including lighting, vases, vessels, and sculpture. They use both blown and sculpted hot glass techniques to create one of a kind, original works. Their pieces are inspired by objects found in primitive and contemporary cultures and rituals. Additionally, the hand-blow glass technique is continually enhanced with inspiration from natural elements such as bone, wood, vine, and rock formations, as well as innovative color application, to inform the signature pieces.

They currently create their beautiful lines of art glass work from a studio located in Ashley Falls, Massachusetts.

The Process

Every piece begins in clarity — molten glass, pure and clear, gathered from a crucible furnace heated to a staggering 2,200–3,000°F. From there, the magic unfolds.

Using traditional hand-blown glass techniques, Danielle and Stephen blow, stretch, and sculpt the softened material — guiding it through motion and gravity to shape the piece into its desired form.

The clear glass is then paired with innovative color applications where the piece is rolled into vibrant frit or powdered glass, layering in color and depth. It then returns to the furnace, the intense heat fusing the pigments seamlessly into the surface. Through a careful rhythm of heating, cooling, and shaping, the form begins to take life.

This is more than a process — it’s a performance of fire, breath, and artistry.
