Get to Know the Artist

Buzz Blodgett, a self-taught glass artist, was first introduced to the art of glassblowing in 1969 by his father, Wally Blodgett. Growing up in a family of artists and surrounded by Southern California’s vibrant art community, Buzz’s early experiences deeply influenced his creative journey.

While still in college, the Blodgett family began selling their handcrafted glass pieces. After graduating, Buzz turned his passion into a full-time endeavor, dedicating himself to perfecting the craft. In 1978, Swedish glassblower Jerry Heintze visited the Blodgett family studio, introducing new techniques that profoundly evolved their style. This fusion of Swedish glassblowing methods and Buzz’s own artistic vision has since become a hallmark of his work.

Inspired by the ocean and surf, Buzz’s creations capture the fluidity and beauty of nature. Working from the Blodgett Glass Studio in Southern California, he produces a range of handmade vases, bowls, and oil lamps- each signed and dated to reflect their individuality.

Buzz is not only committed to his own artistic growth, but also to sharing his skills. He teaches glassblowing at the UCSD Craft Center, where he inspires others to explore the medium. Continuously learning and experimenting with new processes, Buzz Blodgett remains an influential presence in the glassblowing community.

The Process

Glassblowing is a captivating and intricate process that transforms molten glass into stunning works of art. It begins with heating raw glass in a furnace until it reaches a molten state, typically around 2,000°F (1,093°C).

In The Studio

Using a blowpipe, the artist gathers a portion of the molten glass and shapes it by blowing air into the pipe to create a bubble. This bubble is then manipulated using a variety of tools to achieve the desired form. Vibrant colors are added and textures are included to make each piece unique. Once the piece is completed, it is slowly cooled to prevent cracking, ensuring both durability and beauty.

Care and Cleaning

Careful handling is essential to preserve the integrity of the glass piece.

It is recommended to use a soft cloth or feather duster to wipe down the surface and loosen any dust as needed. Be sure to avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive materials when cleaning.
