In The Studio
The ProcessAdam Homan’s artistic process is as profound and unique as the sculptures he creates. Each piece begins with a moment of quiet meditation, where Adam closes his eyes, clears his mind, and focuses on his breath. This meditative practice allows him to connect with an intuitive flow of creativity, opening himself to receive images, voices, or both. These sensory impressions guide the vision for his sculptures, forming a deeply personal and spiritual connection to his work. When clarity strikes, Adam begins the physical process of creation using mild steel for the base of the sculpture, as well as cold roll sheet metal and ‘found objects’ to further bring the sculpture to life.

The ‘found objects’ include things like motorcycle gears, chains, auto transmissions, parts of old tools, typewriters, cameras, etc. Additionally, he may use copper, aluminum, and other metals to accent the piece. As Adam shares, “I’ll take apart anything to see if there is something metal inside I can use.” Regarding tools, Adam uses a MIG wire feed welder, a plasma cutter, an oxy/acetelene torch, as well as a myriad of grinders, drills, and bench mounted tools. His techniques include cutting, welding, and shaping to transform the raw pieces of metal into intricate and unique sculptures. To finalize each piece, he spends a lot of time polishing his work to avoid oxidation and then finally applies a lacquer or powder coating. If fluorescent fiber optics are incorporated, they are added last.
Adam’s work combines traditional craftsmanship with an intuitive, flowing process, giving each unique piece a distinct energy and character.

Care for Metal Sculptures
Larger works may have a clear enamel finish and can go outside if properly maintained. It is strongly recommended to purchase an aerosol can of LPS-2, which is an industrial penetrant that can prolong the steel from oxidation over the years. Spray a liberal amount on the sculpture every few months, preferably during a warm day and allow it to soak in for a few hours. Wipe clean with paper towels and enjoy.
If your sculpture has fiber optics in its eyes or is a table or pedestal sized piece, it most likely has a clear enamel finish to protect it. It is intended for indoors and is easily maintained by light dusting with a microfiber cloth or soft rag. You can add a little water to assist in picking up any dust.
