Creative Gateways is excited to announce a weekend of SVAC Open Studios featuring our resident artists Laura Hines and founder Pilisa Rainbow Lady. We are also honored to have special guest artist Bonnie Sedan join us over the weekend to show and talk about her silversmith work…
Welcoming Bonnie Sedan
We are enthusiastic to feature the self-taught silversmith Bonnie Sedan in our SVAC Open Studio event this April. She first graduated from Cornell College with a Bachelors of Special Studies in both Studio Art and International Business. From there, she built up her career as the youngest silversmith in Sedona, Arizona. Her skills as a silversmith are exceptional considering she believes in handcrafting all of her work, going as far as creating each piece without the help of electric sanders, dremmel tools, or drills. She explained during a brief conversation that, “It really allows me to put myself entirely into each piece.”
Bonnie originally started off perfecting every detail in each piece. However, she noted that “I was so nervous I would scratch or dent or ruin it if I wore it…” so she decided to change what her theme was. She wanted to make it easier for her jewelry to be worn, no matter the occasion. She began intentionally indenting and overworking specific sections of her jewelry to make it more natural to wear. This signature style creates dramatic contrasting areas in her pieces that emphasize time both in how long it takes to make, as well as the impression of history within each piece. This process of distressing the sterling silver also highlights the gems in many of her works.
The stones set into each piece are also hand picked and crafted to fit each design. Much of the turquoise she uses she collects herself from different southwest mines. Other stones she selects from gem and mineral shows to guarantee an original piece for every owner of her work. She stated that working to handcraft every gem and silver set she creates “makes the process more time consuming, but it’s what I enjoy.” This tedious process shows her skills and dedication to her trade.
