Albuquerque, New Mexico
Karen holds a Masters of Science in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Virginia. Her work in glass compliments her practice as a manual physical therapist as both are cerebral, intuitive, and tactile. As an Albuquerque resident, Karen started working in glass in 2003, drawn to its myriad challenges. She likes to experiment and push the limits of the material, focusing on controlling the variables that influence the movement of glass. Through the manipulation of heat and mass, she creates kiln-formed glass sculptures that mirror the organic patterns of nature. Her work explores the relationship between positive and negative space, light and shadow, and the poetic balance they create.
For consecutive shows, Karen was selected as an emerge finalist (2012 – juror award, 2010, 2008), a juried biennial competition for emerging and intermediate glass artists sponsored by Bullseye Glass Company. Additionally, she was honored as a NICHE finalist in fused glass (2010, 2011, 2012 – winning with Fissure, 2013), mixed media (2011) and cast/slumped (2012, 2013 – winning with Gaia). NICHE artwork is judged on technical excellence in surface design and form, market viability, and distinct quality of unique and creative thought.
