Sedona has a kind of magic to it that can be hard to describe to people who haven’t experienced its unique energy yet. Michael recently reflected on how, returning from art shows, there’s a noticeable difference in the kind of community here in Sedona.
Sedona and community
“There’s more connection here, somehow, in our community. More people that seem to be awake to the spiritual or something beyond just living in the marketplace.”
This sense of connection is sometimes characterized cynically as a “New Age” or “Hippie” mindset, but while it’s easy to laugh at some of the more outlandish manifestations of spirituality, a place like Sedona draws people who are fundamentally open-minded, creative, and curious about meaning and expression beyond the every day.
Sparking new energy
One of the challenges for the creative community in this peaceful city is to cultivate an active, progressive energy that stokes conversation and creativity. Compared to Los Angeles or New York, where busy, cutting edge art scenes thrive, Sedona’s gallery scene tends to be more laid back. In the beautiful surroundings of the red rocks, it’s easy for artists to retreat to the quiet of their studios before bringing finished pieces into galleries to display.
Here at Creative Gateways, we like to think we’re playfully challenging that paradigm by opening up our working studios to visitors at any time the gallery is open. Unfinished, messy, sometimes challenging… our works in progress are here for art lovers to enjoy and engage in the process. And our regular program of in-house events mean chances to interact with the creative community are plentiful!
In this way, a visit to the gallery is about more than seeing the artwork. We’re sparking connections between artists and art lovers, creators and receivers, and inviting people who love art to play an active part in its creation.
It’s what makes us so happy to be a part of the Sedona Gallery Association’s First Friday Artwalk. We’re part of a network of galleries across the city who open their doors on the evening of the first Friday of each month and invite visitors and residents to come along and meet the artists who create here.
