Each month, the Creative Gateways studio chooses a theme to inspire our work and act as a focus for our events. Here’s what’s coming up in July…
As the Arizona weather reaches its peak temperatures and the red rocks bake under the sun, we’ve chosen “fired up!’ as the phrase to capture our creativity in July. We did not, however intend for it to coincide with the devastating wildfires that are sweeping the dry desert landscapes. We hope for the monsoons to make an early appearance to give us all some much needed relief!
Firing up in practice
Firing is a literal part of the making process for our glass and ceramic artists. Our glass artists need the heat of the kilns to transform solid glass into pliable, mold-able, or even liquid material. Our ceramicists use a giant ceramic kiln that reaches temperatures of over two thousand degrees to harden and solidify the sculptures within, turning soft, slippery clay into rock-hard, resilient pieces that will last a lifetime.
For artists working in these delicate mediums, firing up means fixing the work of weeks or months into its permanent shape. Placing something in the kiln requires a sort of surrender, and lot of trust- in yourself, in the medium, and even in the kiln. A kind of closure takes place; there are no more changes to be made, nothing that can alter the arrangement that’s gone into the kiln once it comes out.
How we fire up our creativity
As artists, we also get fired up in a metaphorical sense – with ideas, inspiration and passion. Read back through our blog archives and you’ll find tales of successes, failures, challenges and unexpected gifts. The “fire” of creativity needs stoking and fueling if it’s to keep burning; we do that through collaboration, experimentation, and the courage to make bold choices and take risks. We stay motivated by paying attention to the world around us; noticing the details of what’s going on, reading, talking and celebrating the flashes of inspiration that come our way.
What gets you fired up?
All of us can feel fired up about social justice, politics, or what’s going on in our communities. Maybe it’s a particular issue, something we want to protest, or a statement about how we live our lives. Perhaps you get fired up about environmental issues, education, or food. Passion is what connects us and keeps life interesting!
What gets you fired up? Where do you find your creative spark or your motivation to try new things?
At Creative Gateways we’re passionate about being a part of our community, about creating events where everyone can get involved, and about opening up our artistic process. We’d love to welcome you to our events this month, or to drop in any time and see our beautiful space. Let’s get fired up about art together…
